The scientific foundation behind Ambitionprofile.

Learn how the instrument was developed, validated, and benchmarked against established measures of wellbeing, burnout risk, mental health, and workplace performance.

Why Ambitionprofile Exists

High ambition is one of the strongest drivers of performance and achievement. However, research consistently shows that the same traits associated with exceptional performance can also increase vulnerability to chronic stress and burnout.

Ambitionprofile was developed to identify the psychological patterns that determine whether ambition becomes a sustainable strength or a potential risk factor.

What the Assessment Measures

The Core Burnout-Risk Pattern

At the centre of the model is a validated pattern consisting of:

  • Unrealistically high personal standards

  • Fear of failure

  • Harsh self-criticism when expectations are not met

Research suggests that this combination can contribute to elevated stress and burnout risk when sustained over time.

Four Practical Personas

The evidence base

The instrument was developed and validated by Ambitionprofile’s science team, led by Jens Näsström (psychologist, Head of Science), together with external research and psychometric consultants. The evidence now rests on three independent studies of full-time employed knowledge workers — 1,472 participants across U.S. and European samples, combining cross-sectional and longitudinal designs

Across these studies, Ambitionprofile was administered alongside established, independently validated instruments — for instance, the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, the Kessler K6 distress scale, the PHQ-4 (anxiety and depression), the Insomnia Severity Index, a Work Ability score, and the Big Five personality model. Benchmarking against measures the field already trusts is what lets us show, rather than assert, that the instrument works.

Reliability — does it measure consistently?

Internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) was strong and stable across both the European and U.S. samples

Validity — does it measure the right thing?

Ambition is not the same as burnout risk

The core scale is not a relabelling of ambition. Stress Tolerance and Drive — healthy, intrinsic ambition — are statistically near-independent (r = −.10). In plain terms: you can be highly driven and resilient, or highly driven and at risk — and the instrument tells those two apart. That distinction is the heart of what Ambitionprofile does.

It correlates as predicted — in both samples

The core scale relates to established measures of mental health and work functioning exactly as predicted, and the pattern replicates across the European and U.S. samples (all p < .001):

The differences show up where employers feel them

Comparing the most- and least-vulnerable quartiles in the U.S. study, the gaps on HR-critical outcomes were substantial:

Does it add anything beyond the obvious?

A fair challenge to any new scale: does it tell you more than a personality test or basic demographics already do? It does.

Beyond personality. Tested against the full Big Five, the single core scale matched the entire Big Five model in predicting burnout — and added a further 6% of uniquely explained variance on top of it.

Beyond demographics. Controlling for age, sex, job level, tenure, long-term health conditions, and income, Ambitionprofile added 13–26% of explained variance across well-being, anxiety, depression, burnout, and distress — and the core scale was the single strongest predictor in every model (β = .28 to .36), ahead of every demographic variable.

Can it flag real risk?

We also tested whether the scale can separate at-risk from not-at-risk people against clinical cut-offs on the established instruments. Across burnout, anxiety, depression, and distress thresholds, in both samples, it achieved good-to-very-good discrimination (AUC = .73 to .82) — for example, .82 for high personal burnout and .80 for serious psychological distress. That is screening-grade accuracy for an instrument that takes three to four minutes to complete.
